Solid Rock Video is now Distill Media.

Our Rebrand Story

Why Distill?

After four years operating as ‘Solid Rock Video’, we are now officially ‘Distill Media’.

The word “distill” means “to extract the essential or most important aspects of“. This name change expresses our dedication to the “essentials of visual storytelling”: taking stories in their raw form and extracting the core elements to create a product that is pure, engaging and relevant to the viewer. This is how we have worked for years, and we wanted a name that perfectly represented our work.

Our Services

The work we do for you–our clients–doesn’t change one bit. In the past, you’ve come to us to receive crisp, narrative-driven corporate videos. You’ve come to us to host studio-grade professional live-streamed events. You’ve come to us to tell emotive documentaries. Distill Media will do everything Solid Rock Video did for you and more–we’re just stepping up our game!

Our Goal

So, why rebrand at all? We’ll get into it–Curtis has a great write-up talking through his process later on this page. But the short answer: we wanted something better that represented our company. ‘Solid Rock Video’ was always a name that begged us to change it, but we wanted to wait until we had the right name to do so!

"My mother hates my new company name."

“Our worst kept secret is official: I’ve changed my company’s name from Solid Rock Video to Distill Media and couldn’t be happier about this move and what it represents. This is the start of a new chapter in my professional career and I thought I’d take a moment to explain the thought and planning that went into this change.

“While I’ve never been fully satisfied with the Solid Rock Video name, I was hesitant to make any name change until I found one that really ‘fit’. Something that stood out, represented what makes me different, and avoided cliche videography lingo.

“After plenty of research and toying with different ideas, I settled on “Distill Media”. It feels ‘right’. It feels luxurious and professional. It is the right fit for where this company is going.

“But this summer, I told my family that I had finally decided on a name change. My mother was quick to tell me that she did not like the new name. She explained that she didn’t think I should name my whole company after whiskey. That’s not the case–while I’ve been known to enjoy a drink or two, this name has nothing to do with fine spirits.

“If you visit a distillery, you’ll see that the process they go through to create their products takes time, precision, and dedication. Everything is “distilled” to its core components. This process is very similar to what sets me apart as a videographer: I take stories in their raw form and extract the essential elements to create a product that is pure, engaging and relevant to the viewer.

“I have worked for some of Canada’s best broadcasters as a Video Journalist, and that is what sets me apart. I love to ask questions in my interviews that produce engaging answers–answers that have an emotional impact on the viewer. I’m very familiar with the art of taking only the most important aspects of these clips and using them to tell a story. Sometimes it’s a very hard decision to leave a potential clip on the ‘cutting room floor’, but it’s something I do with care and dedication as a service to you.

“So, as 2020 comes to a close, a new chapter begins for us. We are Distill Media now. And I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for trusting me with your stories. It’s been an absolute honour to work with you all and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us.”

Little details

We’ve poured over all of the components of this rebrand thoughtfully. Our dark grey (‘Distill Grey’) is bold, professional, and represents our experience and reputation. ‘Malt Gold’ and ‘Tonic White’ take inspiration from the traditional whiskey distilling processes–the warm gold depicts the raw materials (planning, shooting, editing), and the refreshing ‘Tonic White’ symbolizes the the end result of the distillation: a purified product that required care, precision, and expertise to deliver.
